Workshop 01

Good Debt vs. Bad Debt

Know the difference before you sign anything

Not all borrowing is dangerous — but the wrong loan in the wrong moment can cost years. In this workshop we put real loan offers, car notes and credit cards side by side and teach students how to judge debt by what it buys, what it costs and what it does to their future options.

Good Debt vs. Bad Debt

What you gain

Why it’s worth the evening

  • Stop guessing which offers are worth signing — leave with a simple three-question filter.

  • Understand interest rate, term length and total cost as one connected picture, not three mysteries.

  • Practice with real-world loan scenarios so the conversation at the dealership or bank feels familiar.

  • Learn how one borrowing decision affects your ability to rent, buy and borrow later.

Learning outcomes

By the end, you can

  1. 01

Define good debt and bad debt using purpose, cost and return rather than labels.

  2. 02

Calculate the true total cost of a loan across its full term, including fees.

  3. 03

Compare two loan offers and explain which is better and why in plain language.

  4. 04

Identify the warning signs in a predatory or high-pressure lending offer.

  5. 05

Write a personal borrowing rule they can apply the next time an offer arrives.
