FinSavvy Banking Strategies — Youth

A first bank account that becomes a first financial system

FinSavvy Youth is where a young person opens their first real accounts — not a pretend ledger, but a savings account with their name on it. Working alongside a parent or guardian, students open a savings account, activate a debit card with spending controls, and learn how to read a statement instead of ignoring it.

From there the training turns management into habit. Students set a savings goal, build an automatic transfer from allowance or a first paycheck, sort spending into needs and wants, and learn the safety rules of mobile banking — PIN hygiene, scam texts, and why nobody legitimate asks for a card number by phone.

The final sessions introduce what comes next: how a credit score is built before you ever need it, what a custodial investment account is, and how fees quietly eat a small balance. Every student leaves with a working account, a written savings target, and a guardian who knows how to keep coaching.

Program benefits

  • Opens a real savings and youth checking/debit account with guardian consent — paperwork done in class.
  • Builds an automatic savings habit with a transfer they control, so saving stops depending on willpower.
  • Learns to read a bank statement, spot fees, and reconcile spending against a real balance.
  • Practices safe mobile banking: strong PINs, card freeze tools, and how to recognise scam messages.
  • Gets a head start on credit — what a score is, how it is built, and which early habits help or hurt.
  • Introduces custodial investing in plain terms, so investing is familiar before it is urgent.
